History of Garachico 🌋
Garachico’s history is a fascinating mix of glory, tragedy and resilience that has shaped the unique identity of this charming Canarian town. Founded in the 16th century by the Genoese banker Cristóbal de Ponte, Garachico quickly established itself as Tenerife’s most important commercial port. The result of these lava flows that reached the sea is what we know as El Caletón, the well-known Garachico natural pools.
The disaster left no fatalities, but it completely destroyed the prosperity of the place: with the port destroyed, merchants began to dock their ships further north, in Puerto de la Cruz, and Garachico became a small fishing village, with a large part of its population forced to emigrate to other places. In later centuries Garachico managed to recover part of its economy thanks to the reactivation of economic activities such as fishing and agriculture, but its port would never be the same again.
Garachico was able to preserve this historical and cultural heritage, a legacy of its past splendour; in fact, in 1994 the town was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of Historical Ensemble. Today this town has recovered part of its economic strength thanks to tourism, being one of the most visited destinations on the island of Tenerife for its rich heritage – it has one of the best preserved and representative historic-artistic hubs in all the Canary Islands – and its beauty: in 2021 it was named one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain.
