Where is Puerto del Carmen? 📍

Puerto del Carmen is located in the municipality of Tías, on the island of Lanzarote, which is part of the Canary archipelago. It is only a 10-minute drive from Lanzarote airport, making it a very accessible destination for travellers. This tourist resort stretches along six kilometres of coastline, from Matagorda beach to the old fishing port, known as La Tiñosa.

A bit of history 📜

Although nowadays it is an important tourist destination, Puerto del Carmen has its roots in a small fishing village, called Tiñosa at least since the 16th century. This village was already inhabited by the first settlers of Lanzarote, the aborigines of Canary Islands. With the arrival of the Normans to the island, the place acquired a certain importance as an anchorage for ships and as a commercial port, from which agricultural products were exported.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the place was still a small village of less than 200 inhabitants, losing its importance as a port in favour of Arrecife from 1928 onwards. In 1957 the village was renamed Puerto del Carmen in honour of the Virgin of Camel. Its inhabitants continued to live mainly from fishing and agriculture until the 1960s, when the local economy and that of the whole island began to change with the arrival of the first tourists.

In 1967 the Hotel Los Fariones was inaugurated and tourists began to arrive not only from Spain, but also from all over Europe, mainly from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany and the Nordic countries. With the rise of tourism throughout the Canary Islands, tourist infrastructures were developed and hotels and flats were built in Puerto del Carmen; and little by little, this quiet fishing village was transformed into the lively tourist destination it is today.
